Are you a Martha or a Mary?

Are we listening for God’s voice?

Resources Needed:

  • Multilink cubes- 8 cubes per team of 2 (or other blocks that connect together e.g. lego)

Instructions:

Ask your congregation to find a partner. One person should take 4 multilink cubes and click them together to make a shape, whilst keeping it hidden from their partner. Next they should give careful instructions to their partner on how to make the shape, whilst still keeping it behind their back. They should then swap. Did they end up with the same shape? Did your partner listen carefully? Did you?

Practise being Martha

Resources Needed:

  • A Stop Watch
  • 2 Tables
  • 2 Table Cloths
  • 2 Sets of Cutlery
  • 4 Placemats
  • 4 Plates (plastic is best)
  • 4 Coasters
  • 4 Glasses (plastic is best)
  • 4 Napkins
  • 2 Sets of Salt and Pepper

Instructions:

Ask your congregation to get into pairs. This activity can either be done as a race, or as a time trial. Tell the group that in 2 boxes you have put everything they need to set the table for dinner. Either get their partner to time how fast they can set the table and then switch, or race each other and see who wins. Were they able to think about anything else when they had a job to do?

Making Time for Jesus

Resources Needed:

  • Clock charms for putting on key-rings etc

Instructions:

Ask your group to take a clock charm each. They should try to find a quiet spot in the busyness of the church service to spend a few minutes alone with God – but it won’t be easy! Ask them to put the charm somewhere where they will see it every day, to remind them about Mary and Martha and being aware of the presence of God. Challenge them to find a way to bring an awareness of God’s presence into their everyday lives. Can they find a still place in the midst of all the busyness?
